What's on in Holy Week 2004

« Back to News Index

Sunday, 4 April 2004
Palm Sunday

0800 Holy Communion
0930 Blessing of Palms, Procession and Sung Eucharist
1100 Choral Mattins and 'A Procession of Palms' (Malcolm Williamson)

The Palm Sunday arrangements are different this year. The Liturgy of the day is in fact its own best exposition. This is quite a help, because the complex features at the 0930 service (the palms ceremonies and the singing of the Passion) and the musical feature at 1100 will mean that there will not be any formal preaching on Palm Sunday morning. There will, however, be an introductory sermon to the Great Week on Sunday 28 March at the Sung Eucharist, entitled 'With Jesus in Jerusalem now,' and that is intended to set the scene for our keeping of Holy Week, as is the Reading and Music of the Passion on the same evening.

Monday, 5 April

1900 Holy Communion

Tuesday, 6 April

1000 Holy Communion

Wednesday, 7 April

1300 Holy Communion
2000 Tenebrae at Ewell United Reformed Church

Maundy Thursday
Thursday, 8 April

2000 Solemn Eucharist of the Lord's Supper with the Footwashing, the Reception of the Holy Oils, and the Procession to the Altar of Repose.
The service is followed by the Watch of the Passion, a period for silent prayer. One can come and go as one pleases; there will be books and papers available for those who would like some guide-lines on how to use the time. The Watch finishes at midnight.

Good Friday
Friday, 9 April

1000 Children's Good Friday Workshop
1115 Children's Stations of the Cross
1200-1500 The Celebration of the Passion and Death of Our Lord.
1200 The Preaching of the Passion
1300 The Liturgy of the Passion    (Choral service from 1330)

1930 Stations of the Cross
(in church; the outdoor ecumenical Stations which for many years were led by the Vicar through Ewell Village were discontinued last year.)

Holy Saturday
Saturday, 10 April

0900 Ante-Communion of the Burial of Our Lord (High Altar).

EASTER SERVICES
Saturday, 10 April

2130   SOLEMN EUCHARIST OF THE EASTER VIGIL
The Service of Light, the Vigil readings, the Baptismal Liturgy, and the Mass of the Resurrection.
The Easter Vigil is the principal service of Easter, and the climax of the liturgical year. It was slightly re-styled last year, and so the full set of Vigil Readings will not take place in the church hall an hour earlier, as in past years, but the much shorter alternative pattern will be incorporated into the main Liturgy itself.

Sunday, 11 April - EASTER DAY

0800 Holy Communion
0930 PROCESSION AND SOLEMN EUCHARIST with Blessing of the Easter Garden and the Renewal of baptismal Vows
1100 SOLEMN MATTINS OF EASTER DAY
1210 Holy Communion
1830 Evening Worship at Ewell United Reformed Church
Full details of the choral music at the services is available on the term's Music List available in the Welcome Area.
