Like the Brownie Pack, St Mary's Guides Unit has been in existence since the early 1920s. Originally known as 1st A Ewell Company, the name proudly emblazoned on our original company flag, we incorporated the name of St Mary's into our Unit name following a district re-organisation in the early 1970s.

Links to the Unit's past have been closely maintained - the present Guide Guider herself was a member of the company some thirty years ago and our Assistant Guider has two daughters both of whom were also members.

Although proud of our heritage, the Unit is seeking constantly to help the Guides of today achieve new goals. Our activities are wide ranging from simple patrol-based ones to Unit themed evenings such as our recent very successful Red Nose evening, which raised nearly £40.00 towards Comic Relief, and our Pet Night, when a local vet and her team came to speak to the Guides about the correct care of their pets. A favourite activity night is making the many crafts, which are sold at the Church Christmas Fair.

Guides from the Unit have also visited the London Eye where several new Guides made their promise as their 'pod' reached the top of the wheel. During 2000, a number of Guides also visited the London Dome.

Living up to Guiding UK's tag line of "Surprise yourself", Guides are encouraged to take part in the various activities on offer at local, district and regional levels.

The opportunity to camp is also available. We are fortunate that the Unit has access to the District Campsite "Little Acres" which is in Horton Country Park, near Epsom. Many Guides attended the Scout About Camp held last summer at the Ardingly Showground in Sussex where girls were able to take part in canoeing, moutaineering, grass sledging and archery.

We cater for all girls no matter their religion though we do encourage them to attend Church Parade, which occurs about four times a year. This includes the formal Remembrance Sunday parade when we march with the Armed Services and Scouts from West Ewell Station to church and have a formal inspection by the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell afterwards.
