Diocesan Flower Festival 2009
Along with many other parishes from the Guildford Diocese, St Mary's recently took part in the Guildford Cathedral Flower Gala. The theme was 'A Feast for the Soul' and displays were done to reflect quotes from people ranging from Aristotle to Delia Smith.
The nave windows were on a theme of the months of the year. St Mary's quote was from Henry James, "Summer afternoon, summer afternoon, the two most beautiful words in the English Language", reflecting the month of June. The Church Flower arrangers worked on the theme of an English Summer garden, filling the space with flowers such as ranunculus, alliums, roses, gerberas, lilies, delphiniums and gladioli. A trellis at the back was covered with rambling roses and ivy. There was also a table set for tea with scones and jam, a chair with a flower covered cushion, croquet mallets and tennis rackets.
The church organised a coach to visit the Gala on the first day and 26 people spent an enjoyable day admiring all the flowers.
