Friends of St Mary's Music celebrate 10 years
Last month, the Friends of St Mary's Music, founded in 1994, celebrated their tenth anniversary.
What a decade it has been! The Friends who, at their first meeting, numbered 17 have now grown to 93 (83 ordinary members and 10
honorary members). The committee, with help from members, has suc-cessfully organised some 39 main events. These have included
concerts, recitals, soirees and choral works, with delightful contributions not only from adult performers but from gifted members
of St Mary's choir.
There have also been pleasant social events such as barn dances and a visit to Chichester to hear the choir sing at Evensong
in the cathedral, as well as informal lunchtime organ recitals. The objective has begin not only to provide pleasant musical
evenings and social occasions but to raise extra funds to help the PCC to provide the amenities for the choir and to add to the
Organ Fund. Over ten years, the Friends have given over ?11,000.
The Friends hope to go from strength to strength in future years but this is subject to resources of members being willing to
help with the work entailed in running the organisation. After ten years, the small but valiant committee hope that others will
take a turn in carrying on with this rewarding project.
Subscriptions for 2004 become due on 1 January. All enquiries about membership should be made to the Membership Secretary,
